Popular Pharmaceuticals Ltd.: Research Collaboration with JOHNS HOPKINS University, USA  
   

Department of International Health, Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore, under Johns Hopkins University, USA will conduct a research project named, “Safety and Efficacy of Simplified Antibiotic Regimens for Outpatient Treatment of Suspected Sepsis in Neonates and Young Infants in Bangladesh” in collaboration of Child Health Research Foundation (CHRF) of Bangladesh. The study will be conducted at Dhaka Shishu Hospital, Sishu Shasthya Foundation and Chittagong Ma O Shishu Hospital. The study is funded by USAIDS, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and World Health Organization, Geneva.

This study aims to compare standard regimen of injectable procaine-benzyl penicillin and gentamicin with three simplified alternate regimens which are (1) Injectable gentamicin once daily and oral amoxicillin twice daily for seven days, (2) injectable penicillin and gentamicin once daily for two days followed by oral amoxicillin twice daily for five days and (3) injectable gentamicin once daily and oral amoxicillin twice daily for two days followed by oral amoxicillin twice daily for five days. The study will enroll about 2,600 infants over a three year period.

This project will be using all the antibiotics viz., penicillin, gentamicin and amoxicillin manufactured by Popular Pharmaceuticals Ltd. Bangladesh.
